Watch Dr. Meghan Riehl from GI OnDEMAND in conversation with Nerva co-creator Dr. Simone Peters about the critical role psychological therapies play in managing IBS.
In the webinar, Dr. Peters shares the importance of taking a multidisciplinary approach to IBS management; how hypnotherapy targets physical symptoms; the benefits of app-delivered care; and she addresses the skepticism often present in IBS patients about the role psychological therapies play. “It’s about validating the patient initially—that there is merit in them receiving this kind of care, and listening to a patient about their concerns around engaging in psychological therapies,” she said.
Dr. Riehl discusses how she decides which psychological therapy is appropriate for patients; putting a hypnotherapy intervention into practice; and helping patients activate their relaxation responses. “It’s all about facilitating a more healthy conversation between the brain and the gut,” Dr. Riehl said. She also shares how GI psychology has moved towards becoming a first-line management plan for IBS patients—“It used to be the last thing you try…We are not a last-ditch effort!”
